What Should an SEO Retainer Include?

Define deliverables, capacity, implementation and reporting in a workable ongoing SEO scope.

SEO Agencies Australia · Buyer guidance · 16 October 2026

A prioritised programme

A retainer should explain how work is selected, reviewed and adapted. An initial diagnosis can shape priorities, but it should not become a permanent excuse for unclear delivery. Agree an owner and a way to assess completed changes.

Clear implementation responsibilities

Write down who fixes templates, edits pages, produces content and approves publication. Include dependencies on your developers and subject experts. If work is limited by hours or output allowances, ask how those limits are managed.

Reporting that explains decisions

Reports should connect completed work, search observations and business outcomes, with tracking limitations stated. Agree a cadence and separate brand demand from customer acquisition where data permits. A ranking chart alone does not explain what the team delivered.

Access, review and handover

Your business should retain control of its core accounts. Discuss secure access, change approval, escalation and the handover of work. Ask how unused capacity, scope changes and renewal are handled in the actual agreement.

Put the guidance to work

Browse SEO agency specialisations, compare the same brief with each provider, or request SEO quotes for private administrator review. Listings are not performance guarantees. Sponsored placements are labelled.
